Why are we surprised?
This morning’s paper ran an article on the hundreds of thousands of rape kits unprocessed all over the country. Rape kits are the genetic samples taken from the victim by evidence-collectors (the police) at the time a victim reports the crime. According to the article (and lawsuits filed by one victim whose kit sat on evidence shelves for TEN YEARS before she was able to pressure the authorities into processing it – and whose DNA evidence was responsible for convicting a repeat offender) there is a move afoot to require the authorities to actually do something about this outrageous backlog.
Then again, it’s a crime against women, so the authorities obviously have better things to do.
Keep an eye on this piece of legislation, and be aware.
